The world is composed of two dimensions, the corporeal world and the aetherial one, sometimes referred to as the lifestream. When something, or someone, in the corporeal world is destroyed or dies their aether passes into the lifestream and when new life is born or new matter formed, it draws from the lifestream, creating a cyclical system. The Voidal Hierarchy

Spoken scholars who study the void often use a hierarchy of their own making to categorize the voidsent, commonly referred to as the voidal hierarchy. This structure attempts to place voidsent on a scale from one to twelve according to their strength and intellect, though it should be noted that this a hierarchy purely of spoken making and has no relevance to the voidsent's actual standing in their home shard.
