Brayflox’s Longstop – The Folly of Goblinkind

March 14, 2021 by Niniri Niri Leave a Comment

Excerpt from ‘The history of Vylbrand, from Nym to Limsa Lominsa’ by Archon Niniri Niri.

Deep within Eastern La Noscea, is Raincatcher Gully, a ravine filled with bright flora. The research team on this project sallied into this undergrowth to find the camp of Brayflox Alltalks. Brayflox was the goblin quartermaster of the Company of Heroes, famed for her ability to source any material required by her companions as well as her beauty, at least by goblin standards. This author has heard rumors swirling of her involvement with the illuminati, but will not deign to reply to them here. The Longstop was founded as a trade outpost by Brayflox and her kin, and the goblins proceeded to expand the facility. Unfortunately, evidence from the Longstop’s fall suggests that a being was here before them, namely a true dragon. The Longstop was immediately abandoned in the wake of this being’s awakening.

Thicktwine

The team arrived at the Longstop in a thick patch of jungle, characteristically filled by the undergrowth common of inland Eastern La Noscea. The goblin’s name for this realm was apparently Thicktwine. Goblin etymology can be a little difficult to unravel, but this area’s name could well be in reference to the thick, twisting undergrowth of the region.

The extraordinary diversity of Vylbrand’s flora and fauna is on full display, this far inland.

Brayflox’s Watchbox

Leading off of Thicktwine is a pathway to a raised platform which overlooks the wider Longstop. A small goblin hut occupied this space when the team arrived, and a ‘pathfinder’ assigned by Brayflox was stationed there, presumably in order to maintain the Longstop. The Watchbox was, of course, more-or-less an impromptu watchtower.

This researcher may not enjoy the more fragrant aspects of goblin society, but their endeavoring spirit can hardly be denied.

The Runstop Frontblock

The Frontblock seems to occupy some role as a fortification against threats to the Longstop, and when the team arrived was structured as an airlock-style space with a gate on either side. As with all goblin names, the Frontblock’s name is a portmanteau that means it blocks the front of the runstop, further confirming the area’s role as a fortification.

The bright red bioluminescent plants found here are native to Raincatcher Gully, and are one of the area’s more distinguishing features.

Brayflox’s Runstop

The Runstop is the most ‘civilized’ part of the Longstop, and was essentially a bustling goblin village once more by the time the team arrived. The egg-like huts of the village, typical of goblin make, were under repair after the dragon’s attack and the wonderous technology of the diminutive goblin race on full display. The name runstop likely refers to the purpose of the Longstop, a place to pause and rest from the endless frenetic nomadic ongoings of goblin culture.

Despite their endearing quirks, one cannot imagine that living in a goblin village would be enjoyable, given their more unsanitary proclivities.

Runstop Backblock

A small raised area above one of the many rivers of Vylbrand’s inland, the backstop functions in a similar way to the frontstop. Unfortunately, it was wholly unable to defend against the awakened dragon deep within the Longstop.

Brayflox was certainly helpful in her, uh, ‘tours’ of the Longstop.

The Mudstop Watergush

Proceeding further within the Longstop, the team discovered the Mudstop Watergush. An expansive plain of grass and water currents, fed by a number of small waterfalls, the Mudstop seems to have been used as a residential area by the goblins, with a number of camps throughout the area. The mud- component of the standard -stop name clearly indicates the less tamed nature of this camping area, while the goblins explained that the name watergush was inspired by the various waterfalls in the area.

The ‘Watergush’ flows directly into the ocean, as all things in Vylbrand seem to.

The Longstop Frontblock

While the Runstop seems to have been a camp for short-term visitors, the goblins revealed that the Longstop was intended to be a longer term camp. Regardless, the Frontblock seems to have been a fortification just as its equal was in the Runstop.

One must sympathize with Brayflox, seeking peace and prosperity only for her plan to fall to the mistakes of Coerthas’ past.

Brayflox’s Longstop

Accessed through a ‘gutgate’, Brayflox’s dream lay in tatters when the team arrived. Goblin houses and wagons lay tattered, strewn in their composite pieces across the Longstop by the rage of the dragon.

This author imagines that the camp was likely somewhat impressive, in its prime.

Dragonsleep

At the very heart of the Longstop is the cave which saw Brayflox’s dreams destroyed. Although the cave’s inhabitant was thankfully missing by the time the research team arrived, the last vestiges of the dragon were evident in number of massive, already hatched eggs. Aiatar, a dragon of the Dravanian Horde, had come to rest here and was awakened by the arrival of the goblins, reacting extremely violently.

Dragonsleep must have been an aetherically charged location, as these are the only places in which dragons lay their eggs.
