Titan, the deity of the kobolds, is a mighty, indominable manifestation of the earth and the mountains. In the belief of the kobolds, Titan is not in fact a cruel or brutal god, instead being a kind and loving entity that cares for the kobold race greatly and whose aspect is that of a father. This, however, also leads to the fact that should Titan perceive his children as harmed or wronged he reacts with immense prejudice, seeking the death of any who profaned the kobolds or their lands. As of late, Titan has been summoned primarily to prosecute the kobolds case over inland Vylbrand, sandwiched between the kobold homeland of O’Ghomoro and the coastal regions ruled by Limsa Lominsa. Titan seems to most commonly be summoned be in an area called the Navel, a cave deep within the mountains of Vylbrand that represents the lava and deep earth so important to his myth and doctrine.
Kobold myth presents Titan as a solution to a problem, a benevolent deity that looked out across a cruel and inhospitable world and sought to change it. He reached out, forming the kobold race out of earth and stone. Knowing that they could not survive in this harsh world, the Lord of Crags summoned magma and ore to his sacred mountain, O’Ghomoro. He then taught them to smith and mine, cladding his children in armor and arming them with weapons, allowing them to drive the brutal creatures of the world from their home. Satisfied in their works, Titan then retreated into the magma of the mountain, telling his children that he’d return in their time of need.
The origin myth of Titan may have a number of sources, but to this scholar the most likely is that Titan was inspired directly by a historical kobold, or series of kobolds, that discovered and innovated on the arts of mining, smithing and smelting, allowing their species to rise from a subsistence lifestyle to one that dominated much of central Vylbrand. This must have occurred at least prior to the Fifth Astral Era, as Nymian records indicate that the worship of Titan as a mountain-god was already dominant in that period.
The Lord of Crag’s Abilities – Titan’s physical strength is such that fists can destroy stone, and his punches have come to be known as ‘rock busters’. His stamps can cause a great, disruptive ‘tumult’ or ‘upheaval’ of shifting stone and air pressure, and should they result from a grand leap of his they have earned the name ‘geocrush’ for the force of his fall feels as if it would crush the earth beneath all near him, and sometimes will even do so. He is able to cause veritable ‘landslides’ by stimulating the earth and fire aether within stone to fragment it, then slamming it with his fist. These are not the only manipulations of aether that the primal is capable of, however, as one might expect. He is also able to shape and raise stone in a large ‘granite gaol’ that traps and crushes an unfortunate victim.
One of his foremost techniques was a grand explosion of earth and fire aether expressed through the ‘earthen fury’ of Titan and gestated within a great heart of aether crystal in his core. The Lord of Crags can summon huge explosions of rock shards said to strike with the ‘weight of the land’. Perhaps his best known attack, feared by all the veterans of the Company of Heroes and the later adventurers that destroyed him, is the feared ‘mountain buster’ in which Titan barrages a foe with a burst of earth aether, so powerful that it was as if the earth was ripping free of its confines to unseat and pulverize a foe. By suffusing a stone with fire aether, Titan can create a ‘bomb boulder’ which will explode in a wave of heat and flame.
Real World Basis – The Titans were primordial deities of Greek myth, ruling over the world in its youth before the Olympian gods arrived to overtake them. These beings personified concepts and natural phenomenon more than simply presiding over them as the later Olympians would, just as our Titan personifies the mountain of O’ghomoro. Titan is likely a reference to Gaia, the personification of the earth. Just as Gaia shares her earthen aspect with Titan, they are both mother or father deities and a primordial originator of life.
